WHAT TO EXPECT DURING LASER THERAPY

For most people laser therapy is quite passive. There are no creams, gels, or ointments needed prior to treatment. No pulsating shocks are felt as in forms of electric stimulation. Some patients have reported a slight tingling sensation or tapping along a nerve pathway. Some have noted they sense a slight feeling of warmth. For the most part, the treatment, lasting from 2-20 minutes, is un-noticable.

Following a laser therapy session, approximately 50 percent of patientsreport to me that they can notice an immediate improvement in their condition. This will depend primarily on the type of condition and the length of time the condition has been present. Generally, the more chronic or severe the condition, the longer it takes to respond. The majority of chronic conditions treated will take anywhere from ten to twenty treatments for long term resolution to the problem.

I THINK I SHOULD WARN YOU

There are patients who will experience pain the next day or even shortly after treatment. This is due to a chronic condition being made acute by the laser stimulating the body’s healing effect, and this a positive thing. The discomfort only lasts a short time.

There is also an experience that may give you a false picture of health.  Some patients respond to the pain so fast they believe they are healed. What must be remembered is that pain is usually the last thing to show up and the first to go away. The underlying cause is still there and care must be taken to allow the injury time to recover. I’ve had patients feel so good they go out and golf, do gardening, shovel snow or go snow skiing much too soon, re-aggravating themselves and then claiming, “I tried that laser and it didn’t work”. There are other protocols I use in conjunction with the laser therapy that speed the healing such as: Nutritional therapy Rehabilitative exercises (done at home) Neuromuscular Re-education (deep soft tissue muscle manipulation) These adjunct therapies are NOT OPTIONAL. They are part of the treatment protocol and increase the probability of success by over 50% than if you don’t participate fully in them.

ONE MORE WARNING, FOR YOUR OWN GOOD
It is not unusual that  Health Care Professionals in high positions without the knowledge or experience in lasers to say “Laser therapy has no effect” and that “Laser therapy is humbug”. History shows is that it is difficult for Western medical culture to believe that something that has its roots and early development in Eastern Europe can be viable without significant Western influence. In addition it is hard for them to accept that something as simple as therapeutic lasers can heal so effectively so many ailments without the necessary skill of a surgeon’s hand on a knife, with no discernable side effects and that it can be performed so simply without them can work at all. Please note that for something like this to be considered not effective or humbug there have been over 150 million dollars in sales of lasers in the past three years world wide. There are so many testimonies from patients now living without pain it cannot be all placebos. Instead of questioning the effects of the laser and the over 25 years of researched articles from around the world why not question the methods and research skills of the naysayer? A position of humbleness and openness should be the rule of the day on this therapy. In science, things aren’t always what they seem to be at first sight. What started out as the “Ugly Duckling” eventually became a beautiful swan. All it took was time.
